Feminist Writers Festival

In 2016, Cristy founded the Feminist Writers Festival (FWF) in collaboration with Jo Case (then Program Manager with the Melbourne Writers Festival) to support and promote feminist writers in Australia by hosting a biannual feminist writers festival and a range of one-off events throughout Australia. FWF builds on existing themes and voices around feminism and women’s writing by offering a space for critical engagement and practical support for all feminist writers and readers.

FWF’s inaugural festival took place 2016, and brought together feminist writers and readers to connect and strengthen the diverse writing communities that exist around Australia. The 2016 Feminist Writers Festival comprised a sold out networking day, and five public events, co-hosted by the Melbourne Writers Festival.

In 2017, FWF held a series of eight one-off events around Australia, with events including panels, workshops and in-conversations in locations including Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and Lismore.

In 2018, the FWF received a grant of $50,000 from the Victorian Government to continue our work in promoting gender equality, and held two festivals – one in Victoria from 25-27 May 2018 and one in Sydney from 1-3 November 2018 in partnership with the UTS Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion. Cristy stepped down as co-chair in late 2018.

FWF held a series of one-off events in 2019, with a plan to hold a full festival in 2020. Unfortunately, the pandemic forced a shift of approach and ultimately made FWF unviable.
